The Disappearance:

In March 2009, 2 females were relocated from Bandhavgarh & Kanha, only to discover that the lone tiger of panna has disappeared. Panna Tiger Reserve had lost its entire tiger population, leaving behind a somber landscape devoid of its most iconic inhabitant. The disappearance of tigers sent shockwaves through the conservation community and underscored the urgent need for concerted efforts to safeguard these endangered species.
The Reintroduction:
In response to the alarming decline of tigers in Panna Tiger Reserve, authorities embarked on an ambitious mission to reintroduce the apex predators into their native habitat. The reintroduction initiative, launched in 2009, marked a crucial turning point in the conservation narrative of the reserve. Male tiger from pench was relocated to panna, to accompany the 2 females which were already relocated from Bandhavgarh and Kanha, but he strayed out of the park in November 2009.
He started moving towards pench, indicating its homing instincts. Team led by the then park director, Mr. R. S Murty led the rescue operation which lasted over a month to bring him back. He then settled and mated with both the females. In April 2010, female from Bandhavgarh code named T1 gave birth to 4 cubs, followed by the female from Kanha code named T2, who also gave birth to 4 cubs. All tigers are now descendants of these 3. The process of reintroduction involved meticulous planning, including habitat restoration, prey augmentation, and extensive monitoring of the translocated tigers.
